What is the best way to care for my boots?Updated 2 months ago

While our tannery has seen positive results with Danner Boot Dressing (clear) and many of our employees and customers have used the Maine-made Smith’s All Natural Boot Balm, we are proud to now offer our own Signature Boot Balm made with all-natural ingredients. We don’t strictly recommend one brand over another, as many quality dressings provide similar protection.

The Golden Rule of Conditioning

Before applying any new dressing to the entire boot, always test a small patch of the leather. This ensures the final darkened color and finish are exactly what you are looking for.

Here are our 5-step Cleaning/Dressing Directions:

1. Clear the Surface: Use a damp towel to wipe any dirt off the boot.

2. Dry Thoroughly: Once there is no noticeable dirt, let the boots dry fully.

3. Coat Liberally: Use a clean, dry towel to apply a liberal coating. It is normal for the dressing to sit on the surface at first. Repeat this step 1 or 2 times to ensure every bit of leather is properly coated for slow absorption.

4. The Overnight Cure: Let your boots sit for close to 12 hours.

Need a faster result? You can apply heat (directly with a blow dryer or by placing them near a stove). Warning: Heat will immediately darken the leather; we only recommend this if you prefer that specific look.

5. The Morning Buff: Wipe off any excess dressing with a rag. Your boots are ready for the elements!

Note: The more regularly you dress your boots, the darker they will naturally get over time.
